I don't use a video reference, mostly I animate what I remeber from observation or imagination, and sometimes I just act it out. I'm not against it, though.I might work on dailymations after studying video references at some point. I try not to set any "Do and don't do rules" in these animations, it's usually the quickest way to narrow your spectrum. You can learn TONS of things from frame by frame observation of videos. You'll be surprised how things never quite move or pose the way you think they do. It's also a great way to learn how we never do things as smoothly as they seem, and these unsmooth undesicive actions are usually what makes the animation more alive. But I would recommend that once you watch the videos, try to pick up as many tips as you can from them and then close it and try to animate from what you UNDERSTOOD of the reference, and not just thoughtlessly copy it. once you draw from understanding, you'll be in full control of what you're doing.
Sorry if this has been asked before; Do you ever use any video reference for these little exercises or does that take away the point?
ReplyDeleteI'm an animation student and I find myself falling back on the lens more than I'm comfortable to say.
